Groton's Electric Boat Contributes to Flagpole Honoring Men
Flagpole commemorates men who died aboard the USS Thresher.
Electric Boat is one of two companies that provided a 'substantial donation' to erect a flagpole honoring the men who died aboard the USS Thresher on its way to Kittery from Texas, according to seacoastonline.com.
The 129-foot flagpole will be erected at a Memorial Circle and installed at a commemoration ceremony on April 7. The men died aboard the vessel in 1963.
Project group member Gary Beers, who worked to raise money for the memorial and flagpole, said the Puget Sound Shipyard made a contribution, “And then out of the blue, we discovered that General Dynamics Electric Boat had initiated a Thresher commemorative coffee cup sale,” according to the website.
