If Needed, Groton Is Prepared To Open Senior Center As Cooling Center

Eddie Cipri rested under an umbrella at Bluff Point and watched passing boats ripple the water.

“Feel that nice breeze?  It’s that, and that I’m a little protected from the sun here, and I’ve got my feet in the water. Those three things make it bearable,” he said.

Temperatures were expected to break 90 degree in Groton today, but as of Thursday, Groton’s manager of emergency communications said people were enduring the heat wave.

Joseph Sastre said the town’s senior center and library are open for people to stop and cool off, as are malls and movie theaters. He said the town is prepared if it needs to open a cooling center, but it hasn’t had to so far.

“We’ve got everything ready to go in case we do,” he said. “Especially if we have a lot of power outrages and people lose their air conditioning and they start losing their fans. . . “We’ve got everybody on standby.”
