Outage Delays School Again, Other Town Services Fully Operational

Two Snow Days Used Before First Day Of School

Groton's town services were fully operational Monday after Hurricane Irene blew through the area Sunday but, like most of Groton, the schools are waiting on CL&P to restore power.

Superintendent of Schools Paul Kadri delayed the first day of school due to power outage at five of Groton's 11 schools.  Fitch High School, Claude Chester Elementary School, S.B. Butler, Northeast Academy, and Cutler Middle School were without power on Monday afternoon when he made the decision.

"It is what it is," he said. "We can't open up classrooms without power."

Hurricane Irene has caused Kadri to use two of four built-in snow days before the first day of school. Last year Kadri used six snow days.

The two days before school was scheduled were set aside for professional development and orientation. Kadri said the teachers are beginning so many new initiatives that beginning classes without the necessary training would be ineffective.
