PHOTO: One Way Traffic Again in Downtown Mystic

Heavier traffic and delays are expected, as the roadway will only have one lane open for travel.

Working traffic lights and alternating one-way traffic in downtown Mystic means construction on the Mystic drawbridge is entering its final phase. The $15 million reconstruction of the Mystic drawbridge began in 2001 and 2002 with minor rehabilitative structural repairs.

Construction resumed in December of 2010 breaking off during the summer months. This construction season, which is expected to last until April, will include fixing mechanical components and securing control house operations.

I have received reports that traffic is very screwed up during late afternoon rush hours. The traffic lights don't allow for the extra heavy traffic going Eastbound over the bridge. Police override of the lights would alleviate that problem. Once again, the merchants are being hurt by the traffic jams. People shop elsewhere to avoid the hassles. Once again, we have a case of poor planning for these projects.
