Red Cross Opens Overnight Shelter in Groton for Weekend

Shelter would serve residents from Groton, Ledyard and Stonington. Other hurricane updates, like power outages and road closures, are included in this report.

The Red Cross has opened an overnight shelter at the Groton Senior Center through Monday, for people who are still without power and heat.

Shelter Manager Joe Jackson said the Red Cross would reassess the demand for shelter Monday to decide whether to keep it open longer.

The temperature was expected to drop to 35 degrees tonight, according the National Weather Service.

The shelter would be available to residents of Groton, Ledyard and Stonington, and would provide cots, three meals, snacks, showers and outlets to power electronic equipment.

Connecticut Light & Power reported 2,476 customers in Groton still without power as of 2 p.m.

Other hurricane-related updates are below:

  • Ready to eat meal and water distribution will continue until 6 p.m. today at Poquonnock Plains Park, then will be moved to the Groton Senior Center on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
  • The Emergency Operations Center will remain open until further notice. The number is (860) 445-2000.
  • The Federal Emergency Management Agency will open a Disaster Recovery Center for people who suffered damage during the hurricane, but the date for opening that center has not yet been set.
  • The following roads still have issues due to fallen power lines or trees as of Friday:

Front Street at Main Street (wires down on lawns but street is passable).

Just prior to Cheesbrough at Pearl Street (down wire hanging in middle of roadway but passable).

Spring Street at High Street (low hanging wires and cones in place but passable).

Elm Street at Brook Street (tree and wires down, barricades in place; not passable)

Smith Court off Pearl Street (tree with wires blocking access)

24 Edgecomb (tree across road with wires; not passable).

High Street at #475 (wires blocking roadway; not passable to tall vehicles).

272 Haley Road (telephone police with wires blocking road; not passable).

200 Colonel Ledyard Highway (wires down, trees on wires, but passable).

Ashby by #17 (trees down with wires; not passable).

Ashby at Noank Road (pole at extreme angle; not passable).

209 Cedar (tree down with wires (passable only for low clearance; not passable for bus).

132 Cedar (tree leaning on wires).

991 Groton Long Point Road, right after Palmer Cove Bridge; half of road eroded. (Down to one lane but passable).

Riverview Avenue (damage to road; heave in pavement but passable).

4 Latham (tree blocking road; not passable).

76 Library Street (wire over road, but passable)

  • These traffic signals not working: Route 184 and Flanders Road; Route 184 and Colonel Ledyard Highway; Route 184 and Shewville Road; Route 27 and River Road. All have four-way stop signs. Long Hill at Maxson on flash, Cow Hill Road at Route 184 on flash, Cow Hill Road at Lamphere at flash.
