Five Fun Summer Programs For Kids

As the beginning of summer and the end of school approaches, it’s time to start thinking about summer programs for children. The surrounding area offers programs for children of all ages, from day camps to sleepover camps, with a wide variety of educational and recreational activities.

Reading In the Park

The offers numerous reading programs throughout the summer. Some are drop-in programs, while others require registration. If your little one is still too young to attend a day camp, consider participating in the reading programs offered by the library each week, which require parental supervision and accommodate children of all ages. The library is planning a special “Reading in the Park” day at Poquonnock Park in Groton. The summer reading program is free. Study Marine Science at Avery Point

Project Oceanology offers programs that nurture an enthusiasm for science and the earth’s marine environment. The summer camp programs are open to grades 5 to 12, allowing children to study various habitats including the offshore, near shore, and coastal areas. With the help of professional marine scientists, camp participants are given the opportunity to use marine science research equipment to study the environment. These weeklong programs cost $625, which includes meals, boat transportation, lodging, and program materials. For more information, visit the Project Oceanology website.

Foster The Interests of Older Kids

Summer is a great time to help older kids explore and develop their interests, and Pine Point School is a great place for kids to pursue those interests. The school offers day classes in everything from physical activities such as soccer and golf to pursuits of the mind such as chess and engineering, and creative arts such as sculpture and sewing.  Fees range from $62 to $250. Learning Adventures For Every Age

The summer programs at Mystic Seaport offer children ages 4 to 15 themed day camps in which to explore various topics such as life in the 1800s or sea myths and superstitions. The programs range in price from $150 to $300. Mystic Seaport also offers overnight camps such as Conrad Summer Sailing Camp, which allows children ages 10 to 15 the chance to learn how to sail, no matter what their experience level. The program costs $635 for members or $690 for non-members, but financial assistance is available through the Todd Wilkins Scholarship Fund. Visit the Mystic Seaport’s website for more information.

Find Fun With 4-H

New London County’s 4-H camp is open to youth ages 8 to 17, and offers numerous traditional camp activities such as archery, arts & crafts, nature hikes, and swimming. Weeklong overnight sessions cost between $405 and $425. Programs begin June 26 and run through the summer until August 12. For more information, visit the New London County 4-H Camp website.
