Hygienic Art presents exhibition "CASUAL TORNADO"

NEW LONDON CT - Hygienic Art Galleries are proud to present a group exhibition of new works featuring emerging regional artists Karrie Bulger, Susan Hickman, Rich Martin, Carrie Roseman, Elizabeth Jancewicz and Robin Urbani.

"Casual Tornado" will run from September 14 through October 12, 2013 with an opening artists' reception scheduled for Saturday September 14 from 7-10pm.
Hygienic Resident Artist Susan Hickman began arranging this show with fellow artist Karrie Bulger last autumn. "We are very excited to be featuring several artists who will make their Hygienic debut in this exhibition," explains Susan Hickman. The show developed around artists Karrie Bulger, Carrie Roseman, and Robin Urbani all making showing for the first time in the galleries. "Many of the works are inspired by portraiture in a sense, but explored in unconventional ways." says Susan. A feeling of the other-worldly will definitely be present through each artists' approach into other realms.

Robin Urbani: "I am interested in the ‘spectrum of consciousness’, extra dimensions, and the fact that what we see and know makes up only 4% of our universe; there is an invisible 96% which is dark matter and dark energy. I am interested in life and death and whether there is a continuum."

Karrie Bulger (K-LAB): "I'm drawn to abandoned spaces, stillness, heartbeats, dreamy hazes, dark silhouettes & blurred sadness." Constantly seeking out the beauty in disorder, her work often reads as haunted and melancholy.

Susan Hickman "I've always thought about my paintings as if they were tiny suspended universes. I work with a lot of layers, some I sand down, you get a lot of surprises, and I like how undetermined it is. I like the old mixed in with the new."

Photographer Carrie Roseman describes what the show and it's title meant to her: "for me, it evoked the feeling of a dream, the way that opposites come together but seem to make sense, the way that our dreams are made up of snapshot of hope and memories, happy and sad things, and blurred onto a canvas that is a dreamscape… this works my representation of that dream. "

Hygienic Art Managing Director Rich Martin will also be contributing to "Casual Tornado" with his psychedelic digital collages. Martin explores a personal mythology through poetic visual storytelling. "Casual Tornado is a fitting umbrella to place my work under as the pieces often pull together seemingly random and disparate images that find a place and voice within the context of the shared frame and setting."

Also showing is local artist and musician Elizabeth Janewicz (her group Pocket Vinyl is releasing a new full-length album in October): "Everyone has something they’re drawn to, something they enjoy above all else, art is mine. It is how I connect to myself, how I’ve always connected to others, how I connect to nature, plants, animals, and how I connect to the spiritual world. While I am creating I feel as though I am on the same level with all living things."

Causal Tornado is a small group of six artists exploring very different worlds, through painting, digital art and photography. Please join us for the opening reception on Saturday September 14th from 7-10pm.
