My Diamond is Gone!

My Diamond is Gone! It's a dreadful thought… looking down and finding that your diamond is gone. Let's hope it never happens to you.

It’s a dreadful thought… looking down and finding that your diamond is gone.  Let’s hope it never happens to you.  Knowledge is power so let’s discuss what causes most prong breakage? After all, the prongs are the guardian to your diamond.  Their job is to hold your diamond in the setting.  So what can affect the prongs to cause them to fail?  Well, the most common cause of prong breakage is actually from chemicals.  Chlorine and bromine are the culprits. Where do they come from?  They are found in hot tubs, swimming pools and laundry products.

Chlorine and bromine are commonly used chemical products to prevent bacteria from
growing in our drinking water, in swimming pools and hot tubs. Too much of
these compounds added may cause a human health threat and a durability problem
for settings. The higher the concentration, the longer the exposure and the
higher the temperature the faster the deterioration of the settings.

So use this knowledge and keep your diamonds safe… don’t wear your jewelry in hot tubs
and swimming pools. Take jewelry off when using laundry or cleaning products.
NEVER, NEVER clean rings with bleach. Bring your jewelry in for cleaning and a
checkup.  It’s done while you wait and at Grader Jewelers we do it for free.  Also visit
