Coast Guard Rescues Three Fishermen Off Sinking Groton Boat
The Coast Guard was dispatched to a location off Gardiners Island, N.Y. after a distress call for help.
The fishermen on a Groton boat were rescued by the Coast Guard off the coast of Gardiners Island in N.Y. Monday.
According to a report in The Day, a crew member from the Robert James, a 41-foot commercial fishing boat called Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound for help saying that the boat was taking on water and sinking fast.
The three-member crew was advised to put on lifejackets and hang tight while they dispatched a 47-foot motor life boat from the Coast Guard Station in Montauk, N.Y. Upon arrival, the Coast Guard found the crew members “holding onto the bow of the partly submerged fishing vessel” and were rescued just before the vessel sank.

No injuries were reported and the vessel was left there, according to Petty Officer Second Class Brent Walsh, who said the sea conditions were too hazardous to attempt to dewater the boat.
