Navy Eliminates Positions at Groton Submarine Base

Some positions are eliminated and people will report to Norfolk instead of Groton.

In an effort to trim costs, the Navy is eliminating 35 rear admiral and vice admiral positions in the Groton Submarine Base.

According to a report in The Day, attack submarines will report to submarine force commander in Norfolk from now on but the number of subs and their role will not be affected.

The Navy is reducing its ranks to fall below the statutory maximum of 162 and these reductions will bring the ranks of senior offices down to 151. This is part of a grand plan announced by former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates who wanted to trim more than 100 senior officers to save money.

U.S. Rep Joe Courtney, D-2nd District said he didn’t think the reductions would make the Groton sub base more vulnerable in the event of a BRAC.
