Patch's Poll: Do You Care That The US Olympic Team Uniforms Are Made In China?

Some lawmakers are calling for the non-use of opening ceremony outfits made entirely in China. How do you feel about the news?

When Team U.S.A. walks into London's 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Friday, July 27, they'll be dressed in an outfit made entirely in China, reports ABC World News.

The news agency took a closer look at the outfit - created by famous American designer, Ralph Lauren - during their "Made in America" segment recently and found every piece was manufactured in China.

In response, Congressional leaders in both houses and both parties expressed outrage at the news.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. said that the U.S. Olympic committee should be "ashamed of themselves," according to ABC. Similarly, Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-OH. said, "You’d think they know better."

Several leaders have already called upon the U.S. Olympic Committee to ensure all future U.S. team’s uniforms be made in America. Others have asked they scrap current uniforms and have them remade by an American manufacturer over the next two weeks.

How do you feel about Team U.S.A. uniforms being made in China? Should they be remade in America in time for this Olympics? Or just make it a policy to be made here in the future? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

Why hasn't our President & every member of Congress denounced this as they represent the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA??????

Do you care that the iphone your using is made in China?! More than 90% of purchases in America are made in other countries. That estimate includes our food, pharmaceuticals, & fuel! Either stop asking obvious questions or do something about the issue.

...while we are at it....notice how many American flags that you find in local stores that are made in China and other countries. Usually the little ones that kids wave at parades and people decorate with. I wonder if China would buy Chinese flags marked "Made In USA?" But then, we don't make them. As to the uniforms, they are creepy and so are the hats. Looks like a 1960 Air France crew reporting for their first flight.

Notice that the female has a single breasted jacket, while the men have double breasted jackets. Just another odd fashion tradition. What is with the cut of the pants making them curve and they seem to bell at the bottom. Another 1960's touch. Frankly, the guys might look better in the skirt than the young lady does. Perhaps it is the white crew socks, Creepy.

I think it would be impossible to remake the uniforms in time - and I think the real issue is how this happened? No one has oversight? No one had to sign a contract saying the uniforms would be made in America? I think the Olympic team should not have to pay for the uniforms, and that Ralph Lauren should be made to do some sort of community service - give $10 million to the next Olympic team, fund a manufacturing-apprenticeship for a clothing manufacturer in some struggling U.S. city, something. I never buy Ralph Lauren anything, but if I did, I'd never buy another piece of his clothing.

Ralpho has agreed to make uniforms in the USA (probably importing some tailors from China to work in a New Jersey loft) but at least a move forward.

Is it hypocritical for Democratic Sen. Harry Reid to denounce Not Made in the USA?
Yes. Why now? The New York Garment Industry died years ago. There was a campaign in the 1981 that had a commercial with women and men clothing workers and seamstresses who all sang a song that urged Americans to "Buy American". "Look For the Union Label". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO7VUklDlQw I used to purchase shirts only Made in America. It became increasingly hard to find any made here by the late 1990s. I occasionally found shirts made by a company called Orvis which were made in America. But these shirts were very expensive... $60, $75 and $90. I could buy similar shirts at Kohls for $20. Then Orvis started making shirts Made in India and Vietnam and I stopped buying the shirts. Before we get rid of these Olympic uniforms, let us first see where the other countries ... Italy, France, Spain, England, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, Sweden, etc. uniforms are made .

Why do we have to wait and see what other countries do?
This issue has no substance. As a country, we imported most of our clothes from overseas, our garment factories have been shutting down one by one since the 80's, so it is natural to outsource the making of our Olympic team's uniform to China.
David Irons July 14, 2012 at 01:57 pm
The athletes we send to the Olympics represent the best we have to offer. Their uniforms should do the same, representing the best we have to manufacture in the clothing line. That we outsourced this to China or any other country is an outrage. Scrap the Chinese uniforms.Other companies here at home have already come forward saying they can make replacements here before opening ceremonies. Do it.
But this is only the tip of the iceberg. It represents a far bigger problem. The outsourcing of our manufacturing. The time has come that it is difficult for our military to find US manufacturers for many necessary parts and components of our weapons systems. They are buying some of this too overseas. That is not acceptable. It puts our national defense at great risk. We need to bring these jobs home and we need to do it now. It shouldn't be a partisan issue. It should be a issue that both parties can agree and act on with great haste.

I think the biggest issue with the uniforms is that they athletes look like they are from the country "Ralph Lauren" as the Polo insignia is the most dominant item on the uniform! It's larger than anything else on there. I'd rather see a big "USA" or even the Olympic rings rather than a huge Polo symbol. It's tacky if you ask me.
David Irons July 14, 2012 at 04:53 pm
Agree 100 percent.
Patrick Herring July 14, 2012 at 05:28 pm
You are making a mountain out of the molehill here, comparing making clothes to making advanced electronic parts for our defense/weapon systems. The fact is this; the garment industry has left this country. It moved to China, South America and Southeast Asia, where labor cost is fraction of US labor cost. Are you proposing to bring back this industry? Bring back the factories that crank out shirts and shoes that cost 3 or 4 times more than what we are paying now? Who would buy these expensive shirts, expensive shoes?
As a post-industrial nation, we have moved up in the production chain, leaving the manufacturing phase to countries that can produce products at a lower cost than we can, while we take in the design and innovation work. For instance, Apple sells its iphones to phone companies at about 500 dollars a pop. It costs about 50 dollars to make an iphone in China or Taiwan. What do you prefer to have, 450 dollars for design and engineering, or 50 dollars for materials and manufacturing? The global economic cycle is here to stay; we should embrace it and make it work for our advantage.

I agree that this is the issue. Ralph Lauren clothing is absurdly expensive. His logo shouldn't be prominent because our athletes are not (although unfortunately they will be) advertising his brand. USA or our flag or, as mentioned, the Olympic rings would have been more appropriate.

Clothes are still made right here in the USA. If you want to buy some and help support the American economy, here's a good link listing a wide variety of designers and company who actually have their clothes made here by American workers. Someone should have looked into this before signing Ralph Lauren to design these horrible articles of clothing. http://www.americansworking.com/clothing.html
LiveForFreedom July 14, 2012 at 08:51 pm
Todd Shelton shirts are still made in New Jersey USA. However they are too expensive at $124 per shirt.
Union House makes jeans in the USA but $45 may be too much for the average consumer who shops at Kohls, Target and Walmart. All USA Clothing sells American made clothese but you need to wait for them to go on sale... again theyare very pricey. I would buy these clothes at this price if it meant keeping jobs in the USA if President Obama put an embargo on Chinese made goods. I know most people reading this poll have Chinese, Asian and Indian made clothing in their closets and homes.

@lb...That link is all UNION made stuff....we ill not support UNIONS
Nobody's Fool July 15, 2012 at 03:38 pm
They may be made here in America, but the cloth used is imported from other Countries.
David Irons July 15, 2012 at 05:11 pm
Nobody's Fool, unfortunately you're right. The cloth is imported from overseas. But I will take a half full glass to an empty glass any day.
