The $8.3 million dollar Police Station Improvement Project will cost $5,345,000 dollars plus $3 million dollars in interest. All totaled this project will cost the taxpayers of Groton $8.3 million dollars.

This projects includes replacing the roof, updating the firing range, 2 boilers, increasing the number of cells from 6 to 12, adding a sally port addition, updating the security system and processing room, paving the parking lot, a new 12 vehicle carport and $3 million dollars in interest.

This is an ambitions project that includes everything a police department could want.

Unfortunately, there is NO breakdown available of what each item will cost the taxpayers.

The members of GATE DO support necessary renovations and or additions to the Police station.

However this referendum is presented as all or nothing, giving supporters of a less ambitious approach no option.

Additionally, we at GATE also do not support the Town of Groton practice of removing items that should be approved through the Capital Improvement Project process, to referendum, thus removing the cost of the project “off budget”.

This project should go back to CIP and be completed in yearly stages, in accordance with the budget process, and what the taxpayers can afford.

Groton Advocates for Tax Efficiency does not support the $8.3 million dollar Police Station improvement project and encourages the voters of Groton to Vote NO.
