UPDATE: Arrest Made in Groton Armed Robbery

Middle aged man allegedly robs store with box cutter and flees on foot.

Groton Police have charged a 59-year-old Groton City man with first degree robbery and second-degree larceny in connection with the Dec. 11 armed robbery of the Payless Shoes store at 22 Rt. 12 (Groton Square). 

John D. Bergeron of 101 Hynes Ave. #3 Groton City allegedly entered the store and, brandishing a box cutter-style knife, demanded cash. Police said the employee complied and Bergeron allegedly fled on foot into the shopping center parking lot. No one was hurt, police said. 

According to a press release, Groton Town Police were assisted by Groton Long Point and Westerly (RI) police departments to "identify a suspect." 

Bergeron was held on $75,000 court-set bond. His name has not yet been placed on the state judicial website.

Groton Town Police are investigating an armed robbery of the Payless shoe store, 220 Rt. 12 shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday evening.

The suspect, who was allegedly armed with a box cutter, was described as a white male, 6' 5", between 50 and 60 years old wearing a yellow jacket. After making off with an undetermined amount of cash, the suspect fled on foot.
