Car Crash Caused Power Outage in Noank, Mumford Cove Saturday

Power was restored within hours.

If you lost power in Noank or Mumford Cove on Saturday, it may have been due to a car crash.

Groton Town Police responded to a reported crash at 4:19 a.m. Saturday near 360 Groton Long Point Road, according to a news release. When they arrived, police found a damaged Jeep Cherokee on the front lawn, but no driver, the release said.

They later found the driver and a passenger in the woods nearby, the news release said.

John E. Massengill, 66, of 223 Route 32 in Franklin, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, evading responsibility, fourth-degree criminal mischief and interfering with the investigation. He is due to appear in court on May 4.

The car knocked a fire hydrant off its connection and snapped a telephone pole, causing power outages in Noank and Mumford Cover, the release said.
