UPDATED: Critically Injured Driver In Groton Car Accident Identified

Matthew Kleeman, 19, of U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London, is in critical condition at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Groton police have identified the driver in a car accident Sunday night as Matthew Kleeman, 19, of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London.

Kleeman has been transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital and is in critical condition.

According to a police department news release, Kleeman was driving his 1999 Jeep Wrangler west on New London Road Sunday when it left the road and ended up in a wooded area.

Members of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department extricated Kleeman from the Jeep. He was initially taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital, then transferred to Yale.

A driver was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital with life-threatening injuries Sunday night after an accident on New London Road near Flanders Road, Groton police said in a news release.

The name of the driver was being withheld until family could be notified, police said.

Police responded to the accident at 6:56 p.m. Sunday and found a vehicle in the woods, the release said. Officers determined it involved only one car, and there were no passengers, the release said.
