UPDATED: Fire at Great Brook Road Under Investigation

No injuries; a couple and their preschool age daughter, who live at 201 Great Brook Road, were not at home at the time.

Fire severely damaged the back of a house at 201 Great Brook Road in Groton late Friday morning. There were on injuries, and firefighters extinguished the fire about 20 minutes.

"When we got here we found heavy fire coming out from the rear of the building," said Lt. Greg Hudgens, of the Center Groton Fire Department. He said heavy smoke was blowing toward firefighters as they approached the back of the house, and they initially thought all three fours were ablaze.

They quickly realized the heavy fire was in the basement, and crews stretched a line to reach it, he said. The fire was out in 15 to 20 minutes, he said. The house has a first and second floor and a walk-out basement.
