Former Sailor Gets 30 Month Sentence for Navy Federal Robbery

Dew pleaded guilty to robbing the credit union in Groton last September

By Dirk Langeveld

A former sailor will serve 30 months in prison for robbing a Navy Federal Credit Union in Groton near Sub Base last year

Kevin A. Dew Jr., 29, of New London, will serve two and a half years of an eight-year sentence with the remaining incarceration suspended. Dew will also serve a three-year probationary term during which he must obey conditions such as finding full-time work, undergoing substance abuse and psychiatric evaluation and treatment, and making $220 in charitable donations.

Dew was initially charged with first-degree robbery, second-degree larceny, and criminal possession of a firearm. He pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree robbery on Feb. 27.

According to a Groton Town Police Department affidavit, Dew entered the Navy Federal Credit Union on Sailfish Drive in Groton on Sept. 14 and gave the teller a plastic bag and a note reading, “I have a gun put the money in the bag.” The teller put $5,501 in a bag and also gave Dew a bundle of $2,000.

A GPS device hidden among the money allowed police to track the bag onto the submarine base. Dew, who was identified by his Navy ID, was found in a vehicle with a woman in the passenger’s seat.

A search of the car found the $2,000 bundle, the bag with the note to the teller and $3,601, and $1,093 in the passenger’s purse. Police also found a .32-caliber Keltec pistol with five rounds, none in the chamber.

Dew was identified through the credit union’s security footage and had on the same clothes he was wearing during the robbery, according to the affidavit.

Dew was also charged with sixth-degree larceny in a Jan. 16 incident at the Wal-Mart in Waterford, but this charge was dismissed as part of the plea.
