Groton Appoints New Police Chief

Michael Crowley has been with department for 26 years

Acting Police Chief Michael Crowley has been appointed the new chief of Groton Town Police.

Crowley has been with the department since May 1985 and has served as patrol ofier, acting detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and deputy chief.  He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from the University of New Haven and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

"I have the utmost confidence in Chief Crowley's abilities and know that he will do an excellent job leading the police department," Town Manger Mark Oefinger wrote in a status report to the town council.

Crowley has appointed Capt. Steve Smith as deputy chief effective Oct. 28, Oefinger's report said. Both will be formally sworn in at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 at the Groton Senior Center.
