Groton City Cops Nab Suspect in Avery Market Attempted Robbery

The 911 call alerting police to the robbery attempt came shortly before 5:30 a.m. By 8 a.m., police had their suspect. Gary Frankopoulos was convicted of a 2009 bank robbery in New London.

On Monday Jan. 27, at approximately 5:22 a.m. the City of Groton Police Department received a 911 call reporting an attempted robbery had occurred at Avery Market located at 2 Shennecossett Road.

Police said “officers responded and learned that a white male had implied that he had a gun and demanded cash from the clerk. The suspect then fled the scene. 

Shortly after 8 a.m. GCPD officers located a subject on Benham Road who fit the suspect’s description. Police said the man, Gary Frankopoulos, 38, was positively identified as the robbery suspect and was subsequently arrested.

Frankopoulos is currently on probation following a 2011 conviction for second-degree robbery. Groton City Police arrested and charged Frankopoulos with criminal attempt/robbery in the first degree and criminal attempt/larceny in the second degree. Police said Frankopoulos is being held on a $100,000 bond and will be presented at GA10, New London Superior Court Tuesday.

Patch has learned that Frankopoulos was convicted of a 2009 bank robbery in New London. According to the state judiciary, he was given a 8 year prison term, but that sentence was suspended after 28 months. He was on probation when GCPD picked him up Monday.
