Groton Town Police Chief Out on Requested Leave

Crowley requested personal leave time; Deputy Chief Steve Smith at the helm in the chief's absence.

Town Manager Mark Oefinger granted Groton Town Police Chief Michael Crowley leave last week for personal reasons, according to a report in The Day.

Crowley, who has been with the police force since 1985, was sworn in as chief in October of 2011. At the time he said he was “honored” to lead the department. Crowley served as patrol officer, acting detective, sergeant, lieutenant, captain, assistant chief and deputy chief before being named chief.  He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and law enforcement administration from the University of New Haven and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Deputy Chief Steve Smith is next in command.
