Poquonnock Bridge Chief Outlining Fire Station Closure

The fire district is seeking ways to cut costs.

The Poquonnock Bridge Fire District president asked the fire chief to draft a plan for closing one of the district’s two fire stations, according to a report in The Day.

Although no decision has been made yet, Board President Alan Ackley and another board member asked Fire Chief Todd Paige to outline how they’d relocate equipment and how they’d move the fire marshal’s office to Long Hill Road station if they do decide to close the 13 Fort Hill Road station.

The fire district has been struggling financially and recently, taxpayers approved a $3.5 million budget for this year, which is slightly more than half the requested amount. Chief Paige says the approved amount doesn’t cover payroll and “will decimate public safety.”

Paige said closing the Fort Hill Station will save approximately $40,00 and would increase response time by three to four minutes.
