Poquonnock Bridge Close to Filing Bankruptcy

The fire district continues in financial uncertainty.

Board members of the Poquonnock Bridge Fire District has been battling a financial decline for some time and now, the president of the board has told reporters of The Day that they are “actively considering bankruptcy.”

Voters recently approved a $3.5 million budget for the district but that was less than one half the requested amount. The Day reports that personnel costs of the career firefighters alone add up to $4.2 million and on top of it all, an arbitrator will soon decide if the district has to honor a 10-year contract that was recently ratified, which will add “a few hundred thousand a year” to the district’s spending plan.

Under state law the fire district can’t declare bankruptcy without the governor’s permission and they’re trying stretch their budget to the end of the fiscal year. They may close the 13 Fort Hill Road fire station to cut costs.
