Poquonnock Bridge Fire Chief: This Budget Won’t Last Through Winter

The Poquonnock Bridge fire chief explains the department's finances.

Money is short at Groton’s Poquonnock Bridge Fire Department and if things don’t change somehow, Fire Chief Todd Paige says they department will be out of money before the end of winter.

Paige told the district board that it owes $461,000 to cover expenses this month, not including payroll, and since residents only approved a $3.5 million budget, the district will be out of money by February or March, according to a report in The Day.

In a meeting Thursday, taxpayer expressed concerns about public safety issues impacted by potential cuts to the fire department services. Residents were upset that the district board may limit firefighters’ response to medical calls and that the ladder truck is out of service.
