The Poquonnock Bridge Fire District is on the verge of
bankruptcy or shuttering the
district’s firefighting operations and Fire District Board member Alan Ackley
has written to the state for assistance.
According to a report in The Day, he’s waiting to hear back from the governor’s administration about what possibly can be the district’s next move. Fire Chief Todd Paige has outlined how the district can stay within its $3.5 million budget and the measures include firefighters layoffs, closing the 13 Fort Hill Road fire station, eliminiating the fund balance.
Ackley’s letter to the governor explained what led to the district’s problems, which includes the budget he put forth, unfunded pensions, and the recently ratified 10-year union contract that gives firefighters annual 3 percent raises, among other things.
