Suspect Arrested In 2009 Groton Shooting

Man Captured In Springfield, Mass., Extradited to Groton

Police arrested a 23-year-old Massachusetts man early Friday, almost two years after a shooting near Gungywamp Road and Sailfish Lane in Groton, town police said.

Members of the Springfield Police Department Fugitive Squad found Lavon Pemberton, 23, on April 8 and took him into custody, according to a Groton Town Police news release. There was an outstanding warrant from Groton for his arrest.

Pemberton, of 41 Forest Park in Springfield, was charged with criminal attempt at first-degree assault, criminal attempt at first-degree robbery, first-degree reckless endangerment, unlawful discharge of a firearm and carrying a pistol without a permit, the news release said.

On May 22, 2009, at 1 a.m., Groton police were called to the area of Gungywamp Road and Sailfish Lane, for a report of shots fired.

Officers found a male victim at the scene, the news release said.  Police found that the victim was driving and was confronted by suspects who opened fire. The victim was also armed, shot back and the suspects fled, the news release said.

An investigation that followed resulted in the arrest warrant for Pemberton. 

He was extradited back to Connecticut on Wednesday.

He is being held on a $ 250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in New London Superior Court on Thursday.
