Sales at Groton pawn shop led to arrest; police then found items from burglaries in New London and Waterford in search at Bank Street address; neighbor charged with marijuana cultivation

Police recovered the most of $65,000 worth of jewelry stolen from a New London home in a search of a Bank Street residence on Thursday.

The New London Police Department discovered several items stolen in Waterford and New London burglaries at a Bank Street residence and also arrested a neighboring resident after finding marijuana growing at his apartment.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard said detectives with the New London Police Department and Waterford Police Department executed a search and seizure warrant at 615 Bank Street following the arrest of 31-year-old Scott Tyrone, whom Waterford police charged with sixth-degree larceny on Wednesday.

Reichard said the Waterford Police Department is charging Tyrone with pawning stolen jewelry. A total of $65,000 in jewelry was reported missing in a residential burglary on Williams Street, and Reichard said the majority of these items were recovered in the search.

"Detectives from New London and Waterford police departments located numerous articles believed to have been stolen during recent residential burglaries in New London and Waterford at the 615 Bank St. location," said Reichard. "Detectives will apply for arrest warrants for the occupants of this home upon identifying the locations where the merchandise was reported stolen from."

New London police also arrested 58-year-old Gary Brawn on a marijuana cultivation charge while searching 615 Bank Street. Officers spotted a cultivated marijuana plant growing outside a neighboring apartment and were allowed to enter 621 Bank Street, where they found several more marijuana plants growing inside.

Tyrone was arrested in connection with a Sept. 13 burglary at a Fog Plain Road residence in Waterford. While the homeowners were at work, a thief broke in and stole a checking book, two credit cards, airline frequent-flier book, empty leather wallet, a gold wedding band and a gold pocket watch.

Officer Nicholas Surdo of the Waterford Police Department later determined that Tyrone pawned the watch at Gold Star Pawn in Groton on the same day as the burglary.
