Activists Plan ‘March Against Monsanto’ Saturday

Rally and march "against agribusiness" slated to begin at 11 a.m. in Mystic

According to a statement released by the Washington DC-based group Food & Water Watch, a rally and march will be held in Mystic Saturday “as a sign of protest against agribusiness giant Monsanto and to express ongoing support of SB 802 (formerly HB 6519,) an act concerning the labeling of genetically engineered food.”

Stonington Police said no permit is necessary for the march.

Organizers said “citizens from around the shoreline will gather to rally and march.”

“We will be gathering to protest Monsanto and express support for the labeling of genetically modified food.  March against Monsanto is an international movement with over 400 locations around the world.  We are marching to spread awareness about genetically modified food and CT labeling efforts, promote organic solutions, and support our local farmers,” the statement read.

Monsanto, which describes itself as a sustainable agriculture company, is located at 62 Maritime Drive in Mystic.

The rally and protest march is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at the corner of Coogan Boulevard and Route 27 in Mystic.

Just this week, the Connecticut Senate voted to approve a GMO labeling bill that would require genetically modified foods be labeled.
