Commander of Groton-based Submarine Relieved Of Duty

Michael P. Ward faces allegations of personal misconduct, the Navy said.

Capt. Vernon Parks, commander of Submarine Development Squadron 12, took the action on Aug. 10, according to the Navy website.

"Our Navy has a very clear and unambiguous standard regarding the character of our commanding officers, spelled out in the Charge of Command,” the website quoted Parks as saying. “I reviewed this Charge with Cmdr. Ward before he assumed command. He understood the Navy's high standards for command leadership and he failed to uphold them.”

The website said Ward had been reassigned to administrative duties, and Cmdr. Michael Savageaux had been placed in command of the USS Pittsburgh.
The Navy is investigating.
