Downtown Mystic Parking Ban Set For Thursday Beginning At 4 a.m.

Street milling expected to continue until 5 p.m.

If your plans call for a visit to downtown Mystic Thursday be prepared to find a temporary no parking order in place.

The Groton Town Police Department has issued an official Temporary No Parking Order beginning at 4 a.m. and continuing until 5 p.m.

The ban was issued because of the planned milling set to occur on West Main Street in conjunction with the contentious Mystic streetscape project.

The parking ban covers all of West Main Street from the Mystic Drawbridge to High Street.

Tuesday the Groton Town Council voted to foot the bill for five hours of free parking in the Mystic Art Center parking lot for downtown visitors to the tune of $50,000. Some had called for the free parking program to be rushed to be in place in time for the mill work, but the council could only promise a start date of this weekend.

I am hardly a sideline heckler. I have to live with this project every day and its ruining our business. I sat stoically and put up with it for more than a year before reaching a breaking point.

I'm sure it's hard for business owners to appreciate the good that is being done when their businesses have been dealing with the project for so long, taking a healthy dent out of their sales and ultimate solvency. It seems to me the powers to be could have coordinated the "proper" signage and timing. I get it Ross....I'd be frustrated too. I don't understand how "Man from Mystic" could have even uttered his words..oh, that's right - anonymously.

See you at tomorrows meeting 9am at the mystic art association. They have a deadline. Everyone is pushing to meet it. We know the pavers are coming next week on wednesday, hopefully done by friday. Then in two weeks time the offical road lines and parking spaces will be properly marked, as the tar needs to set. In late August the " landscape" portion will be completed. They have removed the contaminated soil and the big green holding containers. They still have a lot of work to do, all the utility poles need to come down, the light poles need to be installed the curbs need to be set in various areas, and the stone pavers to relace the pebbels between the buildings and the sidewalks in several areas. Ross, I am so sorry, I really hope you can hold on a few more months...but lets hope we may still get July and August to pay the bills an likely debt due to the inconviences of the street scape. For the record we as a merchant group were told numerous times by the contractor and the town project manager that the milling would be done at night.
