Mile of Quarters

During National Night Out on August 2, 2011 at Poquonnock Plains Park from 5pm -8pm, Groton Town Police Department is seeking supporters for their Mile of Quarters campaign. Money raised will be donated to Special Olympics Connecticut. The goal is to raise 63,480 quarters - which would be enough quarters to fill one mile. Individuals, groups, and organizations in attendance are asked to support the campaign by donating a quarter, a foot of quarters ($3), a yard ($9) or whatever they wish
to help reach the goal.

Jackie Turro, Director of Development for Special Olympics Connecticut – Eastern Region says that reaching the goal would mean a lot for the Special Olympics program. “The cost of providing quality competition and training events for our 2,000+ local athletes on a year round basis is staggering,” says Turro. “When we raise money it covers the costs of our programs, for these athletes to continue competing.” Besides the obvious benefits of physical fitness, athletes become more self-sufficient and learn tolerance and patience while being given the opportunity to receive the positive recognition they so richly deserve.

Feet representing $3.00 of quarters will be displayed at National Night Out. Names of individuals and campus organizations who have donated will be written on the feet. By displaying the feet, Groton Town Police Department will be able to see how many quarters are raised.
