Both Groton Ballot Questions Went Down in Flames. Why?

The plans for an extension of water and sewer to parts of Flanders Road and improvements to the Town Police Station both met their demise at the polls on Election Night 2013.

The voters have spoken: No new bonding.

At least not for expanding water and sewer service to Flanders Road or improving the Town Police Station.

Both new ballot questions went down in flames Tuesday night. And that's putting it mildly.

On the question of bonding $5.35 million for "design and construction of improvements to the Town of Groton Police Station," voters waylaid it by a 3,167-1,669 count.

They were even more emphatic on whether to bonding $9.9 million to extend water and sewer service "to the middle segment and lower segment of the Flanders Road area." That ballot question crash-landed by an even-wider margin of 3,606 to 1,229.

What do you think? Why did these two ballot questions hit bottom with a resounding thud? Is it all about "no new taxes," or do you question the need for either or both of the projects?
