Groton Council Approves Two Measures for the November Referendum

One may spur economic development, the other will address needed repairs.

The Groton Town Council took a step in the direction of economic development Tuesday when they decided to ask residents to extend utilities up Flanders Road up to Interstate 95.

Patch had reported earlier that the project has been discussed for years, but most recently came to the forefront in Groton about two years ago, when about a half dozen people - mostly business owners - urged the council to make it a priority.

Groton Town Manager Mark Oefinger told reporters at The Day newspaper that extending utilities up Flanders Road from Fort Hill Road would cost $9.9 million. The project can extend beyond that, which would require more work at a later date.

The council hopes to send that question and another about modernizing the police station to referendum in November.

Updating the police station would cost $5.4 million and includes upgrades and repairs to the cells for prisoners and sally ports, the firing range and the building itself, according to a report in The Day.
