Groton Faces 16 Revaluation Cases, Not Including Groton Long Point Class Action Suit

Suits were filed after the 2011 revaluation.

Groton is still looking at 16 revaluation cases from 2011, not including the class action lawsuit filed by Groton Long Point homeowners, according to a report by the town finance department.

Some suits were filed by the same owner regarding multiple properties. For example, Khalid Investment Group LLC is challenging the assessment of three properties on Eastern Point Road and Route 12, saying the values should be adjsted for the vacancy rates or low sales volume.

Others were filed by individual homeowers. For example, Katherine O. Godbout is challenging the nearly $1 million value of her property on West Shore Avenue, saying the water view has been blocked by new construction.

Some cases have been settled, according to the report. The report shows the town reached negotiated settlements with Shennecossett Yacht Club, Inc., Girard Motors, Inc., John Paul Gouzie regarding 15 Sylvan St., John H. Sutphen and Eunice E. Sutphen regarding 120 Cedar Road in Mystic, and Leo Antonio regarding 0 Antonio Road and 421 Route 12.

saying their properties were unfairly assessed over the market value, violating state law and potentially causing them to overpay taxes.
