Update: Streets Named, Groton Utilities Hydrant Flushing Begun

Water is safe, utility company says, but since it may be discolored you might want to store water for drinking in advance. And don't wash those whites!

Update:
According to the utilities web page, hydrant flushing schedule for this week will occur:

  • Filter Plant, Poquonnock Road, Long Hill Road, and all side streets.
  • South Section of the City – from Poquonnock Road to Avery Point including all side streets between.
Original story:
Groton Utilities began its annual water main flushing and testing program Tuesday.

The program is scheduled to be completed by Friday, June 25, weather permitting.

"Water main flushing is part of Groton Utilities continuing effort to provide the highest quality water to our customers and to ensure fire protection capabilities," a statement read.

All hydrant flushing will be conducted during daylight hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. At various times during the cleaning, the water will be discolored due to the disturbance of naturally occurring minerals that have settled in the water mains. The water is safe to drink.

However, because of discoloration, Groton Utilities advises customers to store tap water in the refrigerator for drinking and cooking until the water clears up.  Residents should also check the condition of the water prior to washing clothes.  If the water is discolored, delay doing laundry until the water is clear. The dates and areas may vary slightly due to severe weather or other emergencies that may affect scheduling.  The complete schedule, updates and changes, are available on Groton Utilities web site at www.grotonutilities.com.
