House Members Question Rt. 11 Toll Bill

The toll debate has once again been opened in Hartford, and legislators are split in their support.

Several state legislators in the area, including Rep. Betsy Ritter, D-Waterford, and Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, have been pushing for a new bill that would allow tolling

The goal is to give the state another way to fund the 8.4-mile extension of the highway to Waterford, and thereby increase the chance of gaining federal funds for the $1 billion project.

The bill has , and now sits in the house.

But in the house, it has met some resistance from other representatives. Some have called the bill "a can of worms" that will open the door for polling across the state.

"The bill could become a can of worms in terms of implications for tolls in other parts of the state," Sen. L. Scott Frantz, R-Greenwich, told the Connecticut Post.

Tolls, which were decommissioned in 1983 following a fatal accident in Stratford, are but one measure state officials have talked about as a possible solution to funding and addressing Connecticut's traffic woes. The DOT is also
