The Internal Revenue Service announced this week that it would give taxpayers and preparers affected by Hurricane Sandy until Nov. 7 to file returns and pay taxes that were due on Oct. 31.
The relief applies mostly to businesses whose payroll and excise tax returns and payments are normally due by the end of October.
Taxpayers and preparers in areas affected by the hurricane don't have to request the relief. It's automatically extended. The IRS, however, said in a news release that if taxpayers or preparers receive a penalty notice, they can contact the IRS to request an abatement because of the storm.
As disaster declarations are issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), more filing and payment extensions could be granted, the IRS said.
