Oxford Takes Another Look at New Ambulance Proposal

The Oxford Ambulance Association says that another ambulance would help its volunteers keep with increases in calls.

OXFORD - After fighting for a new ambulance for the town over the past three years, the Oxford Ambulance Association has brought its proposal back to town officials for funding during the upcoming budget cycle.

The need for a new ambulance has not gone away, says Oxford Ambulance Association Director Jerry Schwab. He met with the Board of Selectmen last month and told them that there has been an increase in call volume, leading him to ask for $198,000 for a third ambulance for the association.

During last year's budget cycle, Schwab was adament with town officials that the proposal is a need, rather than a want.

“I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t bring this to the attention of the town,” he told officials during last year's budget process. He said additional strains will be put on the ambulance association soon because 146 additional housing units have been approved for Phase Four of the Village at Oxford Greens.

“We can’t cover all the calls we have now, and the growth at Oxford Greens will put an additional tax on us… This ambulance has continuously been put off,” he said.

Town officials last year ultimately cut the ambulance, saying they would take a closer look at it this year.

Selectmen did not take any action during last month's meeting and decided to schedule a special meeting to discuss new vehicle requests by town departments. So far, that meeting had not been scheduled, according to information on the town's website.

The OAA should fund the purchase with their own funds since the Town is still funding the hefty salaries of 2 daytime employees who do not even respond to calls, even though that is what they claimed they needed paid personnel for (daytime response). They also claimed they would be self sufficient by now and I am sure they are! Wouldn't you like an EMS job that paid $80,000 a year you never had to leave the house to respond to a call!!!!! They need to stop sucking the town for every $ they can get. When is the last time income & expense statements were submitted to the town by the OAA? We need to look at this organization al closer!

Is it indeed true that there are people who are paid and don't go on calls? We are hearing that is not true. And when did they say they would be self sufficient? I wasn't covering Oxford at that point. Thanks

You need to start signing your name. People who hide behind the internet to snipe at people are either too much of a malingerer to do it in real life or someone who cant stand behind their argument. If you want justifications or dates/times I need your name. I think its pretty fair. But..... be forewarned.... youll be surprised. Better yet: Get your EMT, Join the organization, see for yourself and if you still dont like it change it. Until then: Your still a coward. -Chris Neary
