Your Take: Did The Town Council Make The Right Budget Cuts?

Councilors this week cut the city budget 13 percent, provided zero dollars for the Groton Long Point police department and approved the school board's funding request.

The Groton Town Council made several key budget decisions this week, cutting the city’s budget request by 13 percent, providing zero dollars for Groton Long Point police and supporting the requested budget for the public schools.

Councilors cut the city’s request for highways and police more than $575,000, and City Mayor Galbraith said she would recommend mediation to resolve the dispute between the city and town over funding.

If money is not restored, she said the City Council would have to “cut services tremendously”, lay people off or raise taxes.

At a separate meeting, The Town Council approved the $73.66 million budget proposed by the Board of Education, an increase of 1.4 percent.

Despite the increase, the school spending plan cuts 25 percent of the district’s paraprofessionals and more than a dozen teachers. The school board also decided this week to pay for transportation for students attending magnet schools outside Groton.
