Groton should do more to limit cell use on town roads!

Urge Grotown leaders to take action against driving while using cells on town roads.

Being an avid motorcyclists and bicyclist, I have seen the relative safety of our town roads deteriorate over the years. The use of cell phones while driving has contributed to our town roads become increasingly dangerous.

Having been a victim of a hit and run driver (in Groton) while bicycling, I am very aware of safety concerns on our streets. I returned to school to obtain a criminal justice degree so I could state my positions and have a better understanding of the issues surrounding community safety.

The time has come for town management to step up and take bold initiatives to further strengthen the cell phone and distracted driving laws now on the books in Connecticut. Several towns across the country have adopted local town ordinances to make their roads safer. The results have varied. However, you have to give these communities credit for not simply passing this issue off as a  "law enforcement"  concern.

I have approached town officials several times to try to start a dialogue and look at solutions. The response was far less than positive.  I hope you will support this effort and help raise awareness. Do we have to let somebody's mother, sister, father or brother die unnecessarily BEFORE we, as a community, take action?
