Candlelight Vigil To Honor Veterans On Sunday

Family of Sgt. Ari R. Cullers will be recognized at vigil, which culminates Hope Week events

A Sunday service will honor the country’s veterans, with special recognition given to the family of a Waterford man killed in action last year.

The recognizes Memorial Day and honors veterans as well as active duty military personnel. It is the fifth such vigil that has been held marking the end of the annual Hope Week events hosted by .

The vigil begins at 7:45 p.m. and will take place inside in the event of inclement weather. Luminaries may be purchased at the station for $1 apiece starting at 7:30 p.m.

The event will also honor the family of , a 28-year-old soldier who was born in New London and grew up in Waterford. Cullers was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade on Oct. 30 while repairing a bulldozer in the Kandahar Province in Afghanistan.

Cullers and six other military personnel killed in Afghanistan will be added to the Wall of Honor at the State Capitol.

The ceremony, which will include the addition of portraits of the servicemen and remarks by their families, will take place at 4 p.m.
