Navigating the Road to College - "Shaping your Record" important information for grades 8-11.

Navigating the Road to College
New Seminar Series kicks off October 1st, 2011

SYLVAN IS HOSTING A FREE INFORMATIONAL SERIES FOR PARENTS, STUDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY

We have been offering our “Navigating” series as a FREE community service for several years and the response has always been excellent. Families often attend seminars several times because the information shared is “eye opening” and they always state "they can't wait to tell their friends."

"If your student is in the 8th grade or above, act now, you need to know this information”

The “transcript” is a four-year chronicle of a student’s ability, work ethic, and involvement. No amount of cramming, coaching, or fast talking can make it better. That’s why admissions officers will consider it the key ingredient in evaluating your potential for success as a college student. After all, "…the best predictor of how a person will perform in the future is how he or she performed in similar situations in the past.” (Fiske, 129)

The fact is that it is never too early to start preparing for higher education. However, more and more parents and students are faced with discouraging news or limited choices because they had not proactively planned.

“Shaping your Record”

This seminar serves to ground attendees in the realities of today’s higher education system and the importance of course selection starting as early as the 8th grade and through high school. Topics and discussions include:

  • What is a "Strong Transcript" and how to plan for one.
  • Do you know your child's baseline test scores and goals?
  • Are you familiar with the curriculum they are enrolled in?
  • Learn the importance of educational planning and assessments.
  • Avoid admission problems by taking the right courses and examinations starting as early as the 8th grade.
  • Find out the REAL cost of college remedial courses.

Knowing what will be required for college is essential. Students who take the right courses in high school are more able to succeed in college and in life.

Enrichment, remediation, help with coursework, building confidence —
do whatever it takes to help your child fulfill his or her potential.
