Groton School Board Discusses School Consolidation

School facilities members say that reducing the amount of buildings could save the town money.

School board members began talking about Groton school consolidation again with a focus on closing three older elementary schools and consolidating to one middle new middle school. 

Claude Chester, S.B. Butler and Pleasant Valley elementary schools are in the worst shape, according to a 2010 report by McKissick Associates Architects and School Facilities Director Bill Robarge told reporters at The Day that Groton could save a lot of money if they closed three elementary schools and used the existing middle schools for elementary students. 

One question left to settle is which grades should be included in a new middle schools. Some board members supported a fifth through eighth grade middle schools and others thought sixth through eighth.

A School Facilities task force is hoping to come up with a handful of scenarios for future school construction this fall and conduct a phone survey to gauge community support.
