'I'm Going To Miss You Terribly'

The Fitch High School Class of 2013 was at once exuberant and emotional at its commencement Friday night, the first day of summer, this class of 279 preparing to say goodbye to their high school careers under a made-to-order sky backdrop with thousands of cheering family and friends there to honor and celebrate their achievement.

The ceremony began with a speech by class president Catherine Lanyon’s whose funny and tender remarks had the class at once laughing and holding back tears, something she was barely able to do as her voice quaked.

Valedictorian Erica Mayer reminded her classmates that the world, quite literally is at their fingertips and Salutatorian Sethulakshmi Babu asked her class to, among other things, follow the Golden Rule and closed quoting Winnie the Pooh: “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Class speaker Sean Blais encouraged his classmates to be willing to fail to succeed and reminded them that success is not necessarily measure by how much money one has.

But it was the remarks of Principal Joseph A. Acarese that may have most resonated with the class. He was hired four years ago, and as he told them, “You are my first class and you are very dear to my heart.” He asked them to visit him and he would welcome them with open arms: “I am going to miss you terribly.”
