Panel To Discuss Closing NL County Education Achievement Gap

Discussion will be held on Monday, April 16 at the Waterford Public Library

 

The League of Women Voters of Southeastern Connecticut has announced that they will host a panel discussion on closing the education achievement gap in New London County on Monday, April 16.

“Connecticut has the largest achievement gap in the nation,” Steve Simmons of Connecticut’s Commission on Educational Achievement said in the press release.

“We are 50 out of 50. We are dead last.”

According to the press release, the achievement gap “particularly affects Latino and African-American students.”

Here’s who will make up the panel, according to the release:

  • Dr. James Mitchell - an education achievement-gap consultant and former Groton School District superintendent
  • Valerie Nelson - principal at Groton’s Charles Barnum Elementary School
  • Alison Ryan - principal at New London’s Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School
  • Christie Gilluly - principal at Norwich’s John B. Elementary School.

The discussion will be held at the Waterford Public Library at 7 p.m. on Monday, and it is free and open to the public.
