Student Art Show & Silent Auction Raises Money for Special Olympics

Mary Morrison student and staff art show and silent auction raises $1,600 for Special Olympics

Mary Morrison Art Celebration and Silent Auction to benefit Special Olympics was held Friday night and by all accounts, was a great success, raising more than $1,600.

Mary Morrison fourth grade teacher Amy Murphy was the chairperson and provided Patch some details on the event.

“Primarily a student art show, the halls throughout the school were lined with art from all the classes. To give you an idea, we have over 400 students in the school and each student had 2-3 pieces hanging in the halls.  People were welcome to make any size donations and take some art home. The second part of the evening was the silent auction. This included 75 donated items that ranged from student art, teacher art, CT Sun Ticket package, and donated professional art and photography. We even had donations from the Unified Art program at NFA and some jewelry made by a Special Olympian. There was a little of everything. All 75 items in the auction sold! In all, just over $1,650 was collected.

In addition there were performances by the school band, chorus and poetry club. In particular, the poetry club did a great job creating improvisational poetry based on audience suggestions.

The money raised from the event will be donated to Connecticut Special Olympics CT. The school kicked off its campaign with an assembly featuring Special Olympics Global Messenger. Kathy Ledwidge, from Groton spoke to our students about her experience in the Special Olympics both here locally and internationally in Greece.”
