Whiz Kid of the Week: Cassie DeCourcey

Whiz Kid's Name: Cassie DeCourcey

Whiz Kid's School: Robert E. Fitch High School

Whiz Kid's Accomplishment: Cassie DeCourcey is a sports nut. She not only managed the varsity boys’ soccer and baseball teams at Fitch High School, a recent alma mater, but has managed a number of baseball teams since her sixth grade year. (Her favorite pro team: The New York Yankees.)

“The coach of the baseball team, Marc Peluso, had been in contact with the owner of the Mystic Schooners, Kevin Kelleher,” said DeCourcey of her latest sports accomplishment in scoring a media relations internship. “He was talking about my interest earlier in the year.”

DeCourcey works the Point Streak system for the Schooners, scoring each game. She dreams of working on the administrative side for any professional baseball team. As the only girl in thirteen cousins, DeCourcey assures us she can hold her own.

“I’ve grown up around guys,” said DeCourcey, “but it’s definitely going to be difficult [going into a male-dominated field]. I just have to continue what I’m doing, because I know what I’m doing. It’s been relatively easy up to now. I’m sure it’ll change once I get out of Groton and actually go some place else.”

DeCourcey will attend Eastern Connecticut State University in the fall, studying sports management.  

Key to her success: "I just have a passion for what I do and so I put my entire heart into doing what I do. It literally becomes my whole life." 

Best Advice: "Take every opportunity you have and keep building on everything you've done. Things will come."
