Whiz Kid of the Week: Richard Chen

Whiz Kid’s Name: Richard Chen, age 7

Whiz Kid’s School: Claude Chester Elementary School, Grade 1

Whiz Kid’s Accomplishments: Chen is an accomplished musician, an avid artist, and a bright student. He plays the violin and piano, and can recognize all the notes on the musical scale by ear.

Chen skipped first grade math and reading, and loves learning new mathematical operations.

“I really like solving equations,” he says.

Chen also enjoys drawing comics, and his inspiration comes from his favorite books and video games.

“I always make myself the strongest person,” he says of his comic books.

He also has a friendly, helpful personality. When asked what he would do if one of his classmates had trouble learning something, he said, “I would tell them, ‘Don’t worry, I can help you,’ and then show them how I do it.”

Key to his success: Chen is an attentive and dedicated student.

“He is very focused. When he starts something, he’ll continue on no matter what. He never stops in the middle,” says Jikun Luo, Chen’s mother.

Best advice:  “Sometimes I get stuck on things also, like everyone else,” Chen says. “I just take a deep breath and dig deep until I find the answer.”
