Mystic YMCA Swimmers To Compete in New England Championship

The competition will be held the next two weekends at Springfield College.

Five young swimmers from the Mystic YMCA Hammerhead swim team will compete in the New England Championship at Springfield College starting this weekend.

YMCAs from six states in New England compete in the competition, for kids ages 6 to 18.

Kerry Marcolina, of Mystic, has two sons on the team; Daniel, who has cerebral palsy and joined the team six years ago, and John, who has been on the team five years.

"The thing that's great about swimming is it's not like other sports where you're competing against someone else, because you have your own time to beat. So that's how they often see it," she said.

The competition will be held March 16, 17, 23 and 24.

The kids' ages and qualifying times are below:

  • John Marcolina, 12: 38.18 seconds in the 50 yards breast stroke
  • Cyrus D’Arcy, 10: 43.26 seconds in the 50 yards breast stroke and 1:35.58 in the 100 breast stroke
  • Alessandra D’Arcy, 9: 16.7 seconds in the 25 yards free style
  • Endre Kereshi, 8: 16.62 seconds in the 25 yards free style
  • Delaney Reck, age 7: 16.9 in the 25 yards free style.
