Heads-Up: Bad Ozone Through Saturday

Ozone levels in the unhealthy range for some, especially elderly, kids and folks with breathing issues. Be careful!

Not only is it ridiculously hot, but to add insult to injury, we are looking at unhealthy ozone levels today into Saturday, especially in our neck of the woods, say state and federal environmental and health agencies.

Air pollution levels of ground-level ozone and/or particles are predicted to be in the ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’ range.

The highest levels of ozone will likely occur across south central and southeastern coastal Connecticut tomorrow, Thursday July 18 and will expand into further inland Connecticut on Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, according to the federal Environmental Protection Agency.

That means for some folks, particularly the elderly, very young, and those others with breathing problems, unhealthy ground-level ozone concentrations may cause a variety of respiratory problems including breathing difficulty, coughing, and throat irritation. In the cold season, particle pollution predominates.

Health effects such as: aggravated asthma, chronic bronchitis, nonfatal heart attacks, and even pre-mature death in people with heart and lung disease; have also been linked with prolonged exposure of particles,” according to the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
