My name is Roy Thomas and I started Black Dog Photography in Hoboken, NJ about 10 years ago as a career change.  Prior, I had an 18-year career in corporate recruiting with several companies and my last position was that of an executive at a consulting firm in Manhattan.   Over the years photography had grown into a passion and after 9/11 I decided to leave corporate life to pursue a career in the field I loved and founded Black Dog Photography.   Almost immediately we were very successful eventually opening the city's only storefront photography studio.  Hoboken is essentially a bedroom community for Wall Street and as a preferred vendor for several of the NY Metro's finest wedding venues we were super busy photographing many high-end weddings.  We've been on several wedding reality shows and have photographed dozens of Buddy's cakes! (The Cake Boss)

When my son was born 6 years ago the hyper urban life of Hoboken was not where I wanted him to grow up.  I wanted a kinder, gentler place with less concrete.  I loved to sail, had spent time in Mystic and decided to relocate to this area a few years ago.  I quickly found a space for my storefront studio on Route 1 opposite the Mystic train station.  After an extensive & expensive interior makeover I opened Black Dog Photography in October of 2008!

Business has been great and I'm just getting started! We hosted our first annual high school photography competition a few months ago.  It was successful beyond my expectations and I look forward to hosting it again in 2012.

My photography interests have evolved and I find myself doing much more family, baby and high school senior portraiture.   The NY influence on my photographic style is obvious and separates me from the local competition.  Apparently that’s a good thing because the phone keeps ringing!

Teaching has always been a component of Black Dog.  I've hosted numerous workshops and I am on the faculty at the Visual Arts Center of NJ, a large art school in Summit, NJ. http://artcenternj.org/  Here I teach other photographers studio lighting.   These are intense two-day workshops offered several times throughout the year.  I enjoy teaching and have a knack for explaining difficult concepts.

I live in Pawcatuck with my son and two dogs. (Yes, one is black) and have the most beautiful commute to work along Route 1.  I love what I do and  truly enjoy going to work.  My art hangs on many family’s walls.  How cool is that?

I love it here!
